I have had two appointments now with an artist and both times he's played blaring hardcore loaded with anti-gay messages. I even stopped by the record store before my last appointment and picked up some hardcore that i enjoy, he just left it on the chair. Im in the middle of a really expensive tattoo i just dont think i can handle another 6 hours in the chair listening to people scream about stupid "fuckin faggots".

Re: Homophobic Ink
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 7:52 AMI think the music is for that tattooist, the one who is working. The one being inked should just relax and, as much as it is possible, stay out of the way. Just think of it as delayed gratification. And, if it helps, let the music become an empowering force. "That's me they are singing about and I'm glad and proud!" -

Re: Homophobic Ink
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 9:54 PMOR don't get tattooed by someone you think is ignorant and bigoted. That said, I like a LOT of music, and some music I listen to, while occasionally offering ideas that are decidedly full of shit, will also present ideas that are worth listening to, and I take the good with the bad and filter as needed.
Or.... don't get tattooed by someone you think is ignorant and bigoted. -

Re: Homophobic Ink
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 5:45 AMAnother solution would be to take your MP3 and listen to your own music. I have done that a couple of times when the nusic in the shop is somethhing that I don't like. -

Wed, March 12, 2008 - 8:50 AMI am not sure I could get worked on by someone who I thought would hate me for what I am. Have you spoken to your artist? Speak after a session, not before...

Re: Homophobic Ink
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 9:11 AMAt first it was funny and made me kinda laugh, then he started working on my chest and i found it harded to find my center and the music became distracting and offensive.
I met with one of the other artist in his shop yesterday, we talked forever about books and music and artist so now Im kinda thinking about gettin the rest of my work from him but it makes me feel kinda dirty and cheap. -

Re: Homophobic Ink
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 12:11 PMthat sucks, dude.
after being tattooed by an incompetent biker, whose skulls looked like pumpkins, who showed me the pistol under the counter, who said "i hope that bitch that came in here with the nigger is getting a tattoo cuz i'll drill her ass good" i decided to spend some time getting to know the artist who will be leaving their mark upon my skin for life.
i'm grateful for laser surgery and the amazing artistic development in coverup tattooing, and that i was only 18 and relatively not very far along my tattooed path.
incidentally, i've also learned to (usually) spend about the same amount and quality of time with someone before i have sex with them.
just some thoughts. hope you're able to improve your situation. man, the sternum is no joke, either.

Re: Homophobic Ink
Sat, March 15, 2008 - 10:17 AMGetting a tattoo as well as giving a tattoo is a very personal act between two people. You are paying someone for art and that person is employed because of it. It should be a partnership...one is no more entitled than the other. If you have an open honest conversation with your artist...asking to compromise on the music choice....if he is any kind of understanding human being the problem should be resolved. If on the other hand it's a no go....you can certainly find someone to finish the work. Don't let someone make you feel ashamed of who you are...no one person is better than the other....we are all just different in our own way and lessons in tolerance need to happen.
Be well and stay true to yourself.

Re: Homophobic Ink
Sat, March 15, 2008 - 10:35 AMIf, in the future, when you describe the tattoo to someone else, or see it in the mirror, or reflect back on the moment(s), all you think you are going to be thinking about is how "that asshole tattoo artist was playing that FSCKIN' hateful gay-bashing music," then I suggest you find someone else to finish the work.
